Artie Bear wants a birthday show, so Mum hangs a sheet across a big box to make a little theatre in the sitting room. Pip brings a cardboard crown, Polly brings lolly sticks for puppet handles, and Kit gives Artie a small torch, just what the theatre needs.

Behind the sheet, a lantern makes a huge rabbit shadow, and Artie discovers he can change its size. The show begins: a little rabbit sets off in a boat to find a birthday crown. Then the boat handle comes loose and the boat disappears! Artie freezes, until Pip whispers, "Perhaps it's a submarine." Suddenly the story has a new adventure, and Kit makes a circle of torchlight for the submarine to follow.
